Where to Get the Best Fish and Chips in Benllech?

Best Fish and Chips in Benllech

Benllech is undoubtedly one of the most popular seaside villages in Anglesey. With a Blue Flag beach, and an array of shops, restaurants, and cafés, it’s no wonder people flock here in their droves during the summer months.

But after a day on the beach, it’s only natural that you’ll want to treat yourself to a traditional seaside dish – fish and chips. And luckily, there are plenty of places to get your hands on some delicious fish and chips in Benllech.

Let’s run you through every establishment in Benllech offering fish and chips before giving our verdict on the best place to get your hands on this classic dish.

Fish and Chip Shops Benllech

Finneys @ The Golden Fry Benllech

The Golden Fry Fish and Chips Benllech

This chippy made it into Fry Magazine’s Top 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways in the UK. With slick digital signage, multiple tills on the go at busy times, and an easy-to-understand order ticket system, even at the busiest of periods (think summer holidays), this Finney’s-run establishment keeps the queues moving.

The fish is cooked to perfection here, with a crispy batter and fluffy chips that are some of the best we’ve had in Anglesey, if not THE best. All in all, it’s no wonder that The Golden Fry is one of the most popular fish and chip takeaways in Anglesey. Another excellent feature of this chippy is that most of the menu is gluten-free – perfect for the coeliacs among us.

It’s located up the hill from the beach, behind the Tesco Express car park. You can usually spot it from the queue!

Ocean Fish and Chips Benllech

Ocean Fish and Chips in Benllech

Another popular fish and chop is Ocean, located next to the SPAR off the main road through Benllech. They offer plenty of battered seafood options, with the cod and calamari being the pick of the bunch.

Portion sizes are comparable to The Golden Fry, the chips are excellent, and their curry sauce is also worthy of praise. If you fancy something a bit different, they also offer excellent fried chicken dishes and sometimes make and serve their own pies.

The Jolly Fryer

The Jolly Fryer Benllech

On the other side of the main crossroads from The Golden Fry is The Jolly Fryer. This chippy gives you yet another option for fish and chips in Benllech, although we felt it wasn’t quite up to the same standard as the takeaways mentioned above.

Not only is the food itself not quite as good, but the portions are smaller, and the prices are also pretty steep. You can expect two servings of fish and chips (with the addition of a side on each meal such as mushy peas or curry sauce) to come to over £20. They even charge extra for adding salt and vinegar, which we find particularly outrageous.

Pair those issues with the 3 (Generally Satisfactory) Food Hygiene Rating (the other two chip shops score 5 out of 5, for context), and we would recommend giving The Jolly Fryer a miss for fish and chips and opting for one of the other establishments on this list instead.

Benllech Pubs Serving Fish and Chips

If you’re not after a traditional fish and chip experience, you still have plenty of options in Benllech. For starters, both pubs in Benllech offer fish and chips. So whether you want a “posh” fish and chips or a sit-down fish dinner, here are your options for a pub fish and chips.

The Benllech

The Benllech Pub

Yet another establishment situated a stone’s throw from Benllech’s main crossroads is The Benllech, a Robinsons pub serving up good pub grub and beer. The menu offers diners a plated fish and chips option (among other seafood dishes), and the chips served are of the chunky pub variety.

The portion size is very respectable, and the fish itself is usually tasty (it can vary depending on the chef on duty). All in all, The Benllech is a great option if you’re looking for a heartier, sit-down meal as opposed to the traditional takeaway fish and chips.

The Breeze Hill

The Breeze Hill Pub Benllech

Benllech’s other pub (and hotel) also serves a wide variety of fish dishes, including your traditional fish and chips. Their version offers diners battered cod with triple-cooked chips and a choice of garden or mushy peas. Lemon wedges and tartar sauce are also available upon request.

There’s also a variety of seasonal fish dishes on the specials board, and you can usually get your hands on breaded wholetail scampi as well. The Breeze Hill is a great option if you want to eat your fish and chips in a pub atmosphere with a few drinks.

Where Else Can I Eat Fish in Benllech?

Perhaps you’re not in the mood for fish and chips, but you still want to eat some fresh seafood while you’re in Benllech. In that case, we recommend checking out one of the following establishments. They each serve up excellent seafood dishes, and you’re sure to find something to your taste.

The Bay Cafe / Caffi’r Bae

Bay Cafe Benllech

Locals and visitors alike know this establishment for its incredible, hearty breakfasts that come with all the trimmings. However, The Bay Cafe also serves up some lovely fresh fish dishes, and you can get your hands on some of the famous staples, such as scampi and chips.

This cafe is a breakfast and lunchtime-only affair (shuts at 4 pm), so make sure you get there early to snag a table. It’s definitely worth it, though, as this establishment boasts an excellent terrace directly overlooking Benllech Beach, perfect for a summertime meal.

Beachcomber Bar & Grill

Beachcomber Bar & Grill Benllech

Another Benllech establishment that isn’t necessarily famed for its fish dishes, but definitely shouldn’t be missed if you’re after some good seafood, is Beachcomber Bar & Grill.

Their tapas menu includes dishes such as king prawns and calamari, and their “main” menu offers fish options, including cod goujons and mussels (the menu is regularly updated, so check in advance). On a side note, you will need to book in advance if you want to secure a table here during peak times, as it’s a very popular spot.

DIY Fish and Chips Options Benllech

Siop Y Cranc Benllech

If you don’t fancy any of the above options for any reason and want to cook yourself up a lovely seafood meal in Benllech, then there are a few different ways you can go about it.

The first is to buy your fish from one of the local supermarkets. However, we would recommend visiting the tiny (and it is genuinely miniature) Crab Shop (Siop Y Cranc), which is located adjacent to the car park directly opposite Tesco express.

Recently taken over by Finney’s, this shop offers seafood delights, including dressed crab, lobster, sea trout, tuna steaks, oysters, prawns, and an ever-changing range of local and seasonal catches.

You can then whisk these home to cook in your kitchen, or even better – if you have access to a barbecue – throw them on the grill for a summery twist. Just make sure you get some good-quality chips to go with it.

Which is the Best Fish and Chips in Benllech?

The accolade of the best fish and chips in Benllech has to go to The Golden Fry. This is the place to go if you want your traditional fish and chips done right with big fat tasty chips and crispy fish. With decent portion sizes, competitive prices, and a consistency in service and quality that keeps people coming back for more, it’s no wonder this is a local favourite.

The problem is that this establishment is a victim of its own success, and it can often be very busy – especially in the summer. However, if you don’t mind waiting a little while for your food, it will be worth it.

Ocean Fish and Chips is a very close second and some people even prefer this establishment over The Golden Fry. But finding the best fish and chips in Benllech for you will rest on your own personal preferences, and there are plenty of options if you want a sit-down fish dinner instead.

So you’ll have to try some of the places listed above and make up your own mind.

So there you have it – our recommendations for where to get fish and chips in Benllech. Whether you want a gourmet seafood meal or a good old-fashioned chippy tea, you shouldn’t be disappointed with any of our recommendations above.
